My family forgot about me for many years — until I won the lottery and changed everything.

LIFE STORIES

My children and grandchildren forgot about me for many years.

The phone was silent. Holidays passed in solitude. Birthdays followed one another without calls, without cards, without a simple «how are you?»

I raised three children alone. I worked tirelessly, sacrificed myself for their future, rejoiced at their every success more than I rejoiced at my own. And when they grew up and started their own families, I gradually disappeared from their lives.

I have eight grandchildren. Eight reasons to hope that one day the doorbell will ring or the phone will ring.

But the years passed, and the silence only grew louder.

On my 70th birthday, I was sitting alone at the kitchen table with a small store-bought cake and accidentally bought a lottery ticket.

I expected nothing.

And then the unthinkable happened.

I won millions.

The next day, my photo was all over the news. And suddenly, the silence ended.

The phone started ringing off the hook.

«Mom, we were so worried about you!»
«Grandma, we missed you so much!»
«We’ll come visit you soon!»

People who hadn’t found time for me for years suddenly remembered my address.

A few days later, they all gathered at my house.

Laughter, hugs, conversations… For a moment, I even wanted to believe they had truly come back for me.

But watching their glances, their questions, how often their conversations turned to money, I realized the truth.

And then I stood up.

The room fell silent.

Everyone looked at me expectantly.

I glanced at each of them and said words they definitely didn’t expect to hear…

I looked at the wall where the Mother’s Day card still hung—the one sent by my dentist, the only one that year.

«I was surprised myself, Denise.»

«We were planning to come see you,» she said quickly. «We were just busy.»

«Busy for two years?»

Laughter. Too quick. Too light.

Then Benjamin.

«Hi, Mom,» he said warmly. «The kids miss you.»

«Really?»

«Of course.»

Carla texted hearts, then called and suggested a family get-together.

A few days later, it was all decided: they would come on Sunday.

I cooked, as I always did when I wanted to believe something was important. A roast in the oven. My favorite dishes. A zester—because Denise had once said store-bought frosting «tastes sad.»

Marlene came in from church and found me peeling potatoes.

«You’re cooking like it’s a wedding,» she said. «What’s going on?»

«They’re coming,» I replied.

She looked at me. «Are they really coming?»

I didn’t answer right away.

«That’s the only honest thing I’ve said all week.»

By evening, the house was filled with people.

First, Denise arrived, her perfume coming before words. Carla hugged me and cried as if she’d just come back from war. Benjamin brought flowers with a price tag.

Then the grandchildren—phones, laughter, awkwardness.

Some hugged. Some didn’t. Lily hugged me as if she really wanted to.

For an hour, I almost believed it.

Then Denise put down her fork.

«Mom,» she said carefully, «have you talked to a financial advisor?»

That’s it.

Benjamin leaned back. «People might try to deceive you.»

Carla added, «You should think about your family. Life is expensive right now.»

No one said they missed you. No one asked how I was.

Only money. Plans. Opportunities.

I stood up to clear the dishes, my knee aching.

From the doorway, I heard:

«She’s sentimental,» Denise said. «Let her enjoy it, then we’ll figure it out.»

«At her age,» Benjamin added, «she wouldn’t know what to do with that kind of money anyway.»

I put the towel down.

Carefully.

Silently.

And then I understood.

The following week, I rented the banquet hall behind the Rosebud Diner.

Kelly helped with the tables. Marlene brought flowers. A journalist arrived with a camera.
«Your family is coming?» he asked.

«Oh, yes,» I replied. «They wouldn’t miss this for anything.»

I decorated the hall the same way I decorated all the holidays they’d missed.

Denise arrived first.

«This is wonderful, Mom,» she said. «You didn’t have to go to so much trouble.»

«I know,» I replied. «That’s the point.»

Then Benjamin arrived. Carla immediately noticed the journalist but said nothing.

When they sat down, I stood in front of them.

«I waited for years,» I began. «Waited for visits, calls, proof that I still mattered. I raised my children alone. I was always there. And then I became unnecessary.»

Carla looked down.

«I saved every holiday you missed,» I said.

I pointed to the envelopes.

«Open them.»

Inside were cards, messages, photos of empty holidays.

One plate. One candle. One chair.

Lily’s hands shook.

«You saved all of this?»

«Yes.»

«Why?»

«Because love doesn’t fade just because it’s not returned.»

Silence.

Then Benjamin flared up:

«That’s cruel. Money has gone to your head.»

I looked at him.

«No,» I said. «Cruel is eating Thanksgiving dinner alone while your kids post vacation photos.»

Denise stood up.

«We came because we love you.»

«Then tell me something about me that doesn’t have to do with money.»

No one answered.

And that was the answer.

I picked up the old recipe box.

«Most of the money will go to the fund—for the elderly, for struggling families, for emergencies, for those forgotten, like me.»

«Most of it?» Denise asked.

«Yes.»

Benjamin frowned.

«And we?»

«Here it is.»

«You’ll get something too,» I said. «But not what you expected.»

Each grandchild will get educational or emergency assistance. Not luxury. Security.

And my children?

«A year,» I said. «Volunteering. Real work. Real people. No praise. We’ll talk later.»

Benjamin stood up abruptly.

«So we’re not getting anything.»

«You’re getting what I got,» I said. «A choice.»

He left first. The others followed.

Denise stayed for a moment. Carla was quietly crying into a napkin.

Only Lily remained.

«What do you want me to do?» she asked.

I looked at the empty room.

«Start with the candles,» I said.

She began.

And for the first time in many years, I no longer expected anyone to come home.
